Wild 338. going California.

A job found me few months ago. Yeah, it works that way. And although I'm kind of a bear, I decided to leave my cocoon for a while and accept the adventure.
The location was tempting I shall confess, so here I am crossing the ocean and moving to Venice, California, in a few days now.

To celebrate this I've decided to create a picture. Basically, this is me, 10 years older and 140 years ago, as a european dude moving for the goldrush. Hey it's not about the money (especially as far as the Euro goes...) !!

Thanks to my fella Fox who inspired me in creating a new CG illustration (understand more 3D, less 2D). This is kind of an exercise for me, pushing my limits a bit further, experimenting, etc... in order to feel more comfortable at work, and also to be faster for my regular illustration works.
Still, there is a lot of post process in Photoshop to put more groove in the final image, mostly for the colours, levels and stuff. Background is a matte painting.

Character started from my CG double from the Tattoo project. Zbrush for detailling and aging. Same process for the clothes. 600meg of textures. Mental ray, 3 points lighting with a slight HDRI addon. That's it. kinda classic you may say.

Hope you'll enjoy.
This is kind of a breakdown compared to the regular hero stereotype thingy, but eh! At least it's real. Well, as real as one can be, pushed into CG.

Kudos

This picture was done for a serie I'm working on. One should recognize the character although he lacks some props and his good old Logo. This is done on purpose.

It's alway very hard for me to choose in which gallery I have to post, since this work is based on a lot of 3D and since the post work in Photoshop and Painter is huge too.

I start experimenting with Painter, which is quite a comeback for me; haven't used it since I discovered PainterClassic when I bought my first Wacom... Fun. 'kinda like it. It reminds me the good old days when I was working with traditional stuff and no CtrlZ.
It was printed a week ago. Felt like sharing.

Yeah, these days, i'm working with a fella of mine, on some cool silkscreen prints and Tshirts.
It's way more stylised than the regular CG crap and I like it a lot and it's refreshing appart from my regular character design job for Quantic (amen!).
Another job initially for Imagine FX (UK). In their last issue, they've asked 4 folks to create a redo for a cover. Melanie Delon, Jason Chan and Android Jones were the 3 others involved.
Great fun doing this one, based on a painting from Klimt, "the kiss".
I turned it into a SciFi, post war situation, showing an impossible love between a soldier from a despotic government, and a cute riot girl.
Hope you'll enjoy. Cheers.
Yatoer, the dog face boy, the bus stop boxer, the guy you don't wanna cross in the street late at night.
I could have called him Marvin, not Starvin'Marvin, the other one. Eh!
And like him, he might not only be a brutal weirdo.
Been working on this guy for a while, but i had to hurry a bit, because of the Exposé deadline.
Maya, a lot of Zbrush, not only for details, but also for searching shape, pleasure of sculpting.
Mental Ray, geant textureMaps.
Classical lighting.
Photoshop post painting to kill the CG in the egg.
Hope you'll enjoy. Potential animation one day, i wait for the rig. Meanwhile, i'll switch to the making of a comic book for the sake of my soul!

Dangerine (big in Japan)

Hi !
long time no see. I was damn busy those last months, splitting my time between freelance work and a cool opportunity to make an exhibition in a new gallery called les caniches modernes -> the modern poodles (don't ask me why)in my small town.

I was supposed to start working on a comic book, a cool parody of the Xmen called Zmen, but i must confess i was a bit scared.
My goal was to create all the characters in CG, to have a reference to draw with for each of them. i know it can sounds stupid but this is how i work, a cool therapy to avoid the white page trauma...
Anyway,
I've decided to use this exhibition (Big in Japan) as a deadline for the creation of 6 of the main characters used for the first scenario (initially 7 but i failed). And it worked (i mean, 7th character appart, the others are ok. grr) !

And because obviously it wasn't a tough enough deadline, i went for serigraphy, considering i had the opportunity to work with a guy from the gallery, Mr ttdmrt .
I was my first time (shy) and it was also a world of new constrains to work with. Pretty interresting, it also gave me the kick in the butt to be more radical in my pictures and stop nitpicking with monkey stuff. Am i clear ?
So here they are, the Zmen. You can play who's who if you want.

They are some older works in the exhibition, but i showed them here previously, not gonna polute this thread with'em all unless you ask for it
They are printed on canvas and post process with acrylic paint, spray and a funky work with varnish and collages sometimes.

And if you're really motivated you can have a look at my blog (www.e338.com) for some more pictures.

Hope you'll enjoy. Waiting for your comments.
I'm making an exhibition in a small but rock'n roll gallery called "les caniches modernes", and some of my older works and some brand new ones will be displayed.
Big prints on canvas with painting touch ups, serigraphy for the new works (not even finished yet).
Regular e338 technique, CG modelling, rough render, huuuuge photoshop post painting.

Hey hey hey,
A long time ago, when i was 18-20, i was drawing. Yeah yeah, drawing; with real pens, inks, terror, etc...
And my latest drawings were about chicks with guns, big robots, and collages. It was what one could call my "Otomo/Shirow" time.
Then, i started to focus on characters and i left mechanic on the sideway (some might see a relation with the fact that i still don't have a driving license which could be the reason of many frustrations, bah... anyway, i bought a bicycle few weeks ago )...
Autodesk asked me for some visuals, and this one was a rejected proposal for Maya, that i left at modeling stage.
Because i thought it was interresting (i know - it ain't a big revolution - the big monowheel thingy have been seen many times before) i felt like pushing it further.
Using my actual technique, the 3passRender+photoshop, i made this pict.
Occlusion pass, a raytrace + shadows pass and an HDRI speculars render. No texturing (which means NO fucking UVs, yeahahaa).
Hope you'll like it.
It's my tribute to the master Otomo and, in the meantime, a way to say hi to my fella Pascal Blanché who is also a huge fan of Akira's father.

Thanks to "Fox" for some of his psychopath advices as well.

USA today

Last year, i had the opportunity to work for the english magazine "CG world". I had to create some super heroes and i ended up with some very classical figures. I made a couple of attempts on some original designs (more sculpty/Botero like characters), but unfortunately they were not selected.
Because i'm a loony bastard, i made myself a quick picture, called "USA today", with a very dense/fat/strong/funny super hero. This picture was designed for the web, in 20-30 min i think.
And after one year, i felt like it was time to push this idea a bit further.
Yeah yeah... this new proposal lacks the funny aspect of the initial one and it's a bit more serious, even if, to me, proportions are still amusing.
So i found back an old release of the geometry, that i've tweeked in Zbrush for 2 or 3 hours, then rendered in Maya, with a basic lighting and an occlusion shader. Back to photoshop, i guess i must have been doodling for 6-8 hours in the end.
This time, it is designed for print (A3-300dpi). Hope you'll enjoy.

April of this year, while i was working in Italy on DearAnne, Alias contacted me to create the cover design for MotionBuilder.
It didn't take me long to say "YEAH-SURE" to them.
I was almost totaly free on this job, as what they wanted was my usual mish mash of 3D and 2D overprocess.
i did a couple of sketches, to get the idea, then i started with the modelling.
The entire process, from scratch till the end of the pict took me a month, after my daily job hours.
Hell, i was exhausted in the end.
Alias people really enjoyed this picture, and i was really happy with that, it's very encouraging.
So now, i'd like to share it with you.
Hope you gonna like it.
